Social Security Recipients Will Automatically Receive Stimulus Checks.
Recipients of Social Security Benefits will receive economic stimulus checks automatically. Currently this includes Social Security Disability and Social Security Retirement beneficiaries.
At first, the IRS had said that only taxpayers who had filed tax returns for 2018 or 2019 would receive their payments automatically. Those on Social Security, would have to file a simple tax return in order to receive their check.
Many Social Security recipients make too little money to be required to file a tax return and may not have filed a return for either year. Lawmakers expressed concerns saying filing a tax return would, “place a significant burden on retired seniors and individuals who experience disabilities.”
For those who receive Social Security payments and did not file a federal tax return, the IRS will use information provided by the SSA.
Eligible individuals will receive a payment of $1,200 for individuals who earn less than $75,000 per year and $500 per child younger than 17. Payments will be received however the recipient receives their Social Security payments, either direct deposit or check.
According to the SSA’s website, they are working closely with the Treasury to address outstanding questions about SSI recipients receiving the economic stimulus check as quickly as possible. At this time, SSI recipients are not required to fill out an SSA-1099, a form that provides income information that is then reported to the IRS. This is also the form the IRS will be using to provide economic stimulus payments to Social Security Recipients.
