“…[M]y subsequent struggles have instilled in me a profound belief in the miraculous potential of life.”
Joey McRae and his twin sister Bridget were premature babies who were both born with Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA), a congenital heart defect. However, Joey’s sister passed away at just 17 days old. This profound loss leaves its mark on families in many different ways, and Joey has come to have a strong belief living each day to the fullest and working toward a goal regardless of any challenges.
When reviewing all of our excellent submissions, McRae’s attitude is what stood out to Berger and Green. Each year, we offer a $1,000 scholarship to college students who were diagnosed with a congenital heart defect or heart disease, and we are pleased to offer it to Mr. McRae.
Unmatched Gratitude and Joy Through Tough Times
McRae has gone through his own share of challenges in his young life, as he also has a neurological condition called cerebral palsy. People with cerebral palsy can and do live full, rich lives, but there are times where the condition makes many experiences harder to handle.
As a young teen, Joey started playing ice hockey. Cerebral palsy did not stop him from getting out on the ice, and the sport allowed him to grow and learn. However, the year after joining, McRae was cut from the team when he could not physically keep up with his peers. Determined to follow his dreams, McRae began training regularly, and he was able to rejoin the team.
Grit and perseverance are valuable qualities to have, and Joey McRae has made it his mission to strive for excellence.
Drawing on Family for Strength
McRae is undoubtedly shaped by the loss of his sister so early on in his life, but the continued love and support from his family also motivates Joey every day. McRae writes that his parents offered “constant encouragement, unconditional love, and belief in [his] potential” throughout his life. Their commitment to providing opportunity for their son allowed Joey to pursue his dreams and live his life to the fullest.
Joey knows that life will always present challenges, but Bridget’s life and his parents’ love have helped him face each day with compassion, gratitude, and resilience.
