IKEA has voluntarily recalled 80, 000 baby safety gates. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the gates can open unexpectedly which then poses a risk for falls and unexpected injuries.
The recalled gates were IKEA’s PATRULL Models:
- PATRULL Safety Gate and extension
- PATRULL KLÄMMA Safety Gate and extension
- PATRULL FAST Safety Gate
The gates are primarily used to gate off access to stairs to prevent children from falling down them.
To date, there have been 10 reports of injuries including concussions, cuts and bruises.
The gates have been sold online and in stores from 1995-2016, ranging in price from $10.00 to $60.00 and were manufactured in Denmark.
The gates were first recalled in May due to reports of the gate unmounting from the wall or not staying in place.
IKEA has advised anyone who owns one of these gates to discontinue its use immediately and to return it to an IKEA store for a full refund.
If someone is injured due to a defective product, a product liability claim may exist. A claim may be pursued to pay for damages caused by the defective product such as medical bills, missed time from work and pain and suffering.
It is a manufacturer’s responsibility to make sure their products are safe for consumers.
