Getting Disability Based on Your Pituitary Gland Disorder

The SSA publishes a book of impairment listings, known as the Blue Book. This book outlines the criteria you must meet to qualify for disability benefits. Usually, you can look up your diagnosis and see the criteria immediately. However, when it comes to pituitary gland disorders, the SSA handles the qualifications somewhat differently.

Pituitary gland disorders can affect a wide range of bodily functions, and the complications you experience depend on the parts of your body affected. While these disorders have their own impairment listing in Section 9.00 of the Blue Book, this entry points you toward other listings that address that contain the criteria you need to meet to get disability.

Understanding How This Works

For example, imagine you suffer from diabetes insipidus and chronic dehydration because of your pituitary gland disorder. Your condition affects your water and electrolyte balance, which harms your kidneys and causes serious complications that prevent you from working. In this case, Section 6.00 of the Blue Book would outline the criteria you need to meet to get benefits.

Proving Your Qualifying Impairment

Your medical records and other medical evidence play a key role in proving your impairment. For this reason, we recommend getting your doctor to help with your application before you file. They will be able to:

• Help you identify which listings apply in your case; and
• Explain the qualifying criteria; and
• Ensure you have the medical evidence, medical imaging, laboratory findings, and other clinical reports required to get approved for benefits.

Getting Benefits Without the Blue Book

Even if you do not meet a Blue Book impairment listing, you can still qualify for benefits based on your Residual Functional Capacity (RFC). Your RFC is an evaluation of your remaining abilities. It considers:

• They type of work you can do; and
• How long you can work at a time; and
• How often you can work.

If your pituitary gland disorder prevents you from being able to work at your current job, a previous job, or at any other job you might qualify for, you should get approval for benefits.

There are three ways the SSA can evaluate your abilities to get your RFC:

• Someone from Disability Determination Services will evaluate your abilities based on your application and medical records; or
• Your doctor will evaluate your abilities based on their knowledge of your case and your medical records; or
• A third-party doctor will examine you to determine your remaining abilities.

Meeting the Technical Qualifications for Disability

You also need to meet the technical qualifications for the program you are applying for. Otherwise, you could receive a technical denial.

The SSA could issue a technical denial because of:

• Blanks left on the application; or
• Incorrect or invalid information on the application; or
• Problems with your name, birthdate, and Social Security Number matching.
• Do not meet the work requirement for SSD or the income and resources requirements for SSI.
