Disabling Symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease
Parkinson’s Disease is a serious neurological condition that affects motor skills and speech. The three identifying characteristics of the disorder are slowness of movement (known as bradykinesia), tremors, and muscle rigidity. It is thought to result from a destruction of dopamine-creation cells in the brain, causing an inability to communicate with and control muscles throughout the body. As communication breaks down between the brain and body, the well-known trembling sets in, along with many other affects. Some of the more noticeable symptoms include loss of motor skills, lack of facial expression, rigidity in muscles, confusion, memory loss, and depression.
The cause of Parkinson’s Disease is unknown. Other conditions may cause similar movement breakdowns, often called Parkinsonism, including stroke, meningitis, or adverse reaction to medication. There is no current cure for Parkinson’s Disease, but there is research into new treatment options to control the destruction of dopamine and discover the cause of the disease.
