Symptoms and Treatment of OCD
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, or OCD, is a mental illness marked by unwanted, repeated thoughts that create anxiety (obsessions) and a set of repeated behaviors intended to reduce anxiety (compulsions). Obsessive thoughts can have a wide range of topics, but the anxiety they produce and the compulsive behavior performed to alleviate the anxiety are what characterize this condition.
Often, people with OCD do not recognize that they have the disease until it is extreme, or they may not recognize it at all. A common obsession is cleanliness, someone with this obsession may constantly think about the germs in their home or on their hands, and may wash their hands repeatedly. The compulsion can ease the anxiety caused by the obsessive thoughts, but when the thoughts return, so will the need to perform the behavior. Another sign of OCD is the compulsion to redo certain activities and counting until a set number of times – such as locking a door or switching on a light on and off.
Once OCD is diagnosed, treatment will generally be behavior therapy in combination with medication. The behavior therapy will help to reduce the compulsion to complete the OCD behavior. Medication can also reduce the anxiety that a person with OCD may experience. OCD treatment can take a long time before noticeable changes may take effect, but it can help people with OCD to be less overwhelmed by their compulsions.
