Getting Benefits Based on a Hemochromatosis Diagnosis

The Social Security Administration (SSA) evaluates hemochromatosis, or haemochromatosis as it is sometimes also known, as a chronic liver disease under Section 5.00 – Digestive of the agency’s impairment listings. These disability guidelines outline the criteria you need to meet to qualify for benefits. You will need to provide your medical records and related evidence to prove you meet the requirements. This evidence may include:

• Documentation of treatment and results
• Clinical testing results
• Medical imaging to document symptoms
• Proof of progressive deterioration of liver function

• The type of work you can do
• How long you can work
• How often you can work

Evaluating your RFC requires you to provide certain information during the application process, as well as asking your doctor to complete an evaluation based on their knowledge of your impairments and your medical records. In some cases, the SSA may ask you to undergo a consultative examination with a doctor the agency chooses and pays for.

If your RFC shows you cannot work your last job or any job you may qualify for, you could get benefits.

Meeting Other Qualifications to Get Disability Benefits

In addition to meeting the medical criteria for disability, each Social Security program has technical qualifications you must meet as well. The local Social Security field office determines if you meet these qualifications before forwarding your application and materials to the Office of Disability Determination Services. If you do not meet the strict criteria, you will receive a technical denial.

Some of the technical qualifications include:

Social Security Disability Insurance

• Earning enough work credits by working long enough and recently enough
• Having an earned income below the substantial gainful activity limit

Supplemental Security Income

• Having a total income below program limits
• Having few available assets
