Signs and Treatments of Crohn’s Disease
Crohn’s Disease is a chronic inflammatory disease that primarily affects the intestinal tract of those affected. It occurs when the body’s immune system mistakes the intestinal environment as foreign bodies and sends white blood cells to the intestines, causing swelling and discomfort. Crohn’s Disease can affect portions of the intestine, with other portions remaining functional.
Because Crohn’s Disease can affect many areas of the body, including intestines, joints, eyes, skin, and liver, the symptoms associated with the disease vary widely. They sometimes include persistent diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever, loss of appetite, vomiting, rashes, arthritis, fatigue, and confusion. There is also an increased risk of colon cancer associated with Crohn’s Disease.
Currently, there is no cure for Crohn’s Disease, and management is often required for a lifetime. Medications are the first line of treatment. If medication proves ineffective, Crohn’s Disease patients can sometimes be helped by a resectioning of the intestine – removing the sick and damaged portions and connecting the healthy portions.
