Xarelto and Defective Product Injuries
The two pharmaceutical companies who manufacture and market anticoagulant Xarelto recently announced a large settlement in a mass tort that included more than 20,000 plaintiffs. These plaintiffs suffered uncontrollable bleeding while taking the drug and accused the drug companies of failing to warn them of this possibility. This settlement should end multidistrict litigation in Louisiana related to this potentially dangerous drug.
If you took Xarelto and suffered uncontrollable bleeding, the Berger and Green team want to review your case at no cost to you. You may be eligible to pursue a payout. Call or text us today at 412-661-1400 for your free consultation with a Xarelto lawsuit lawyer.

Bayer Pharmaceuticals developed Xarelto (Rivaroxaban) and partnered with Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen Pharmaceuticals to market the anticoagulant. Xarelto is a “next generation” blood thinner. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the drug in 2011, and it quickly became a popular alternative to Coumadin (warfarin).
Unlike previous anticoagulant drugs, those taking Xarelto did not require frequent monitoring by their doctor. Doctors most frequently prescribed Xarelto to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or strokes caused by blood clots.
Unlike warfarin and other older blood thinners, there was no antidote to Xarelto for many years. This meant a car accident, violent act, cerebral hemorrhage, or another incident that caused injuries could quickly turn deadly. Uncontrollable bleeding could occur even after a relatively minor accident. Thousands of people required emergency surgery, and many died as a result. There was no FDA-approved antidote for Xarelto until late 2018.

Recent Developments in the Xarelto Multidistrict Litigation
Johnson & Johnson and Bayer announced they wanted to settle the mass tort against them in March 2019. They reached a settlement agreement with the more than 20,000 plaintiffs on March 25. This includes those who participated in the Xarelto multidistrict litigation.
This settlement includes a $775 million payout to these individuals and families. In their announcement about the settlement, the companies denied liability but said they wanted to put this behind them.
In the handful of cases that went to trial before this settlement, the pharmaceutical companies were victorious or able to get the verdict against them overturned. This includes a $27.8 million payout awarded to an Indiana couple by the jury in the first Xarelto case to go to trial.
