Essure Implant Complications

Bayer created and marketed the Essure Permanent Birth Control System as a simple, noninvasive method of permanent birth control. Doctors inserted the tiny Essure coils into the woman’s fallopian tubes and scar tissue formed to seal them closed. While this product is relatively effective for preventing pregnancy, complications are common. These include:

In April of 2018, the FDA restricted the use of Essure in the United States, limiting it only to use by doctors who agreed to follow strict protocols to inform their patients of the potential dangers. Bayer has since announced it will stop the distribution of Essure in the U.S. at the end of 2018.
