How do You Qualify for Social Security Benefits Insurance (SSDI)?

In order to qualify for SSDI benefits, you must meet two very important criteria. First, you must be able to show that you meet the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) criteria for disability.

Secondly, you must have enough work credits to qualify for the program. When you are working, a portion of your wages is deducted from your paycheck and put towards social security. In order to qualify to receive benefits, you must have a minimum of 20 credits. In most cases, that’s about five years of work.

Although having the minimum amount of work credits is important, you may still qualify for SSDI benefits with less than 20 credits depending on how old you are when you apply.

How do I Know if I Meet the Criteria for Disability?

Your medical history can establish if you meet the criteria for disability with medical documentation. If you can’t obtain documentation this way, you must be able to show that your disability prevents you from working.
