The Office of Hearings Operations, also referred to as OHO, is the Social Security office that is responsible for the management of Social Security Disability hearings.

When you become disabled, it can be confusing trying to figure out what type of Social Security benefits you may be entitled to. The Social Security Administration will determine which benefits you are eligible for. The medical standards for determining disability are the same for SSD and SSI.

To be eligible for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) you must be disabled and meet certain low-income requirements. If you are under the age of 65, disabled, and have worked and paid into Social Security you may be eligible for Social Security Disability Benefits (SSD).

For both Supplemental Security Income and Social Security Disability Benefits you will need to answer questions regarding yourself, your work and medical history.

A person can qualify for both Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Benefits (SSD) if you meet the low-income requirements and have paid into Social Security.

In some cases, you can receive both SSI and SSD benefits at the same time. This is also known as “concurrent benefits”. To receive concurrent benefits, you must be approved for SSD benefits, but will receive low monthly payments through the program.

A low monthly SSD benefit can be caused by:

• Very little work in the last 10 years.
• Very little work history at the time you became disabled.
• You became disabled at a young age.
• You earned low wages throughout the course of your employment history.

The Social Security Administration will take an application for both Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Benefits (SSD) when you apply if you meet the eligibility requirements. It is important to apply for both types of benefits if you can.
