How to Appeal Your Social Security Disability Denial

After receiving notification that you were denied benefits under the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program, you should begin the appeals process right away. You have only 60 days from the receipt of your denial letter to take the first step, which is to file a request for reconsideration.

Stage 1: Submitting a Request for Reconsideration

Within the first 60 days after being notified that you did not get approved for benefits, you must file something called a request for reconsideration. This is the first part of the appeals process.

A request for reconsideration asks the SSA to review its original decision and determine whether it might have enough evidence to grant you disability benefits.
