The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is recalling several blood pressure medications due to a cancer risk. The FDA says the medications contain an ingredient that poses a cancer risk.
The recalled medications include: Valatan 80 drug registration No 1A/54 (NG); Valatan 160 drug registration No 1A 10/54; Valsarin 80 drug registration No 1A 4/60; Valsarin 160 drug registration No 1A 5/60; and Valsarin 320 drug registration No 1A 6/60.
The first two medications are manufactured by Silom Medical and the other three are made by Unison Laboratories.
The FDA explains that an “impurity” has been introduced during the manufacturing process of a key ingredient known as valsartan.
Valsartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker, typically prescribed to patients with hypertension.
Patients cans safely use medications containing valsartan if they are not on the list that is being recalled today. Other batches are not contaminated according to the FDA.
The FDA says these drugs need to be destroyed. If you have been prescribed any of the recalled medications, stop using immediately and return to the pharmacy or hospital you received them from.
