Possible Connection Between Baby Powder and Ovarian Cancer

According to the American Cancer Society, talcum powder, which is found in baby powder, may cause ovarian cancer if the powder particles are able to travel to the ovaries. It is important to know that there are two kinds of talc: asbestos talc and asbestos-free talc. Talc that contains asbestos is generally the cause of cancer when inhaled. Multiple studies have researched the possible correlation between talcum powder and ovarian cancer; however, the results were mixed. Some studies reported a slightly higher increased risk in women who use talcum powder while other studies reported no increase. Overall, if there is an increased risk of ovarian cancer, it is thought likely to be small.

The growing awareness of talcum powder came after a study was published in the medical journal Cancer Prevention Research in June 2013. The study showed that women who had used various genital powders with talc as the main ingredient faced a 20-30% greater risk of developing ovarian cancer. Many women who have been diagnosed with ovarian cancer are pursuing a class action lawsuit against Johnson and Johnson’s. In October 2013, a South Dakota jury found enough evidence to prove a connection between using Johnson and Johnson’s Shower-to-Shower body powder and ovarian cancer.
