According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the issue with the bikes stem from a “quick release” lever on the front wheel of the bike. If the release comes in contact with the disk brakes, it can interfere with the wheel causing it to lock up or even separate from the bike.
Three accidents have been reported so far to Trek and in all three incidents the riders sustained injuries. The injuries include a fractured wrist and facial injuries; however, one rider’s injuries were so severe they are now permanently paralyzed.
Trek is recalling 900,000 bikes in the United States and 98,000 in Canada. The bikes included in the recall are all Trek models built from 2000-2015 that have front disc brakes and a black or silver quick release lever on the front wheel.
