After an eighth child has died from an IKEA dresser, IKEA along with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), are issuing a recall reminder. The reminder is in addition to the reannouncement in 2016 of the recalled dressers and chests. There have been 186 reports of IKEA’s Malm dressers tipping. 91 of those incidents resulted in an injury. There have also been 113 reports of other IKEA dressers tipping. 53 of those incidents resulted in injury. Overall, eight children have died from the dressers since 1989. The most recent death occurred in May when a two-year-old became trapped after his IKEA Malm dresser tipped over on him. The recent death prompted the recall reminder from IKEA and the CPSC that all dressers should either be removed form the home or anchored to the wall. The original recall was issued inn 2015. Consumers were told to contact IKEA for either a refund or a wall anchoring kit.
Although the threat these dressers possess is serious, IKEA says the wall anchoring kit eliminates the danger of a dresser tipping over.
