The problem stems from there being insufficient friction between the wall and the pressure-mounted safety gate to hold the gate in place.
So far, there have been 18 incidents worldwide including three in which a child was injured due to falling down stairs. No injuries have been reported in the U.S. at this time.
There are 58,000 gates in the U.S. and 17,000 in Canada that are involved in the recall.
The gates are the Patrull Klamma or Smidig safety gates. They are white, made of steel and are about 29 inches tall with an adjustable width ranging from 29 to 34 inches.
IKEA is urging consumers to stop using the safety gate and return it to any of their stores for a full refund.
