The auto manufacturer Mazda, has recalled 80,000 cars and SUVs due to a potential airbag risk. The recall includes the passenger airbags in certain 2007-2009 and 2012 CX-7, CX-9 and Mazda 6 vehicles.
This is the second recall this year for these vehicles. In January, a recall was issued that replaced the faulty inflators with the same parts just newer. However, research shows that ammonium nitrate, which is used in the inflators, can deteriorate over time. Mazda will now replace these inflators with new inflators that do not use ammonium nitrate.
The faulty Takata airbags have been responsible for 19 deaths and over 180 injuries world-wide. The inflators carry the risk of exploding when deployed, releasing sharp, metal fragments.
