Our Akron Crohn’s Disease Disability Lawyer Can Help You Pursue Benefits If You Are Unable to Work

To get approved for disability, you must “prove that the disability is so severe it keeps you from working.” With Crohn’s disease, this generally means that you have chronic symptoms and complications that do not allow you to work and earn a living. This could include diarrhea or abdominal pain and cramping. 

In the Social Security Administration’s impairment listings (Blue Book), Crohn’s disease falls under 5.06: Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). The criteria in this listing outline when the SSA believes Crohn’s disease causes a disability. 

Alternatively, you could qualify without meeting these criteria. You will need to show that your illness does not respond to your medical treatment well enough to allow you to earn more than the current substantial gainful activity limit and will likely continue to do so for at least a year. This includes: 

• $1,550 a month for 2024
• $1,620 a month for 2025

You will also need to have worked and paid into Social Security, earning at least 20 work credits. However, you may qualify with less credits. If you are not sure if you have enough credits, let our lawyers review your work history and the circumstances of your claim.

What Is Social Security Disability for Crohn’s Disease and Who Qualifies?

Social Security Disability includes two programs. The medical qualifications are the same for both. 

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)

SSDI is a program for those who have previously worked and paid into Social Security. While you cannot earn more than the current substantial gainful activity limit, there are no other income limits on this program. 

Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

SSI is an income-based program. It considers your income and available resources. There are set limits on both categories that change each year.
