What Is an Eating Disorder?
Eating disorders are serious conditions in which a person becomes extremely concerned with food and/or weight gain. There are three main types of eating disorders: anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder.
Anorexia nervosa is a type of eating disorder classified by the obsession to be thin through self-starvation. People with anorexia may refuse to eat or frequently skip meals. Signs of anorexia could also be excessive exercising, negative self-image, thin appearance, or intense fear of gaining weight.
Bulimia Nervosa is a type of eating disorder classified by episodes of binge eating then purging. Binging is typically defined as consuming large amounts of food in a short period of time. Purging will generally result in vomiting and/or excessive exercise to rid extra calories from the binge. Signs of bulimia may include frequent trips to the bathroom during or after dining, damage to teeth and gums from vomiting, and/or negative body image.
Binge-eating disorder is classified binge eating without the attempt to rid oneself from excessive calorie intake or weight gain. Binge-eaters will eat when they are not hungry or continue to eat even after they become excessively full. Signs of binge-eating may include eating to the point of discomfort and pain, feelings of shame from over eating triggering another binge, and frequently eating alone.
