So far, more than 30 million cars and trucks have been recalled due to faulty Takata air bags.
In some cases, the Takata air bag defect caused shards of metal to shoot out from the air bags like shrapnel, straight into the drivers’ faces. The underlying problem is the inflation device inside the air bag. Essentially, it is a metal container filled with propellant wafers that has been show to occasionally catch on fire and explode. The explosion can send metal pieces flying through the car at high speed, resulting in very significant injuries or death to the people within.
Various factors affect the likelihood of an explosion. Such factors include the heat and humidity to which the car is exposed and the design of the vehicle itself.
