Halloween Safety 2022
Halloween is here and while it should be an evening of fun, it is important to know the risks associated with the holiday as well.
Halloween ranks second for the most pedestrian fatalities in the year.
With more young children on the road than any other day, Halloween can be one of the most dangerous nights for drivers and pedestrians.
Children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car on Halloween than any other day of the year.
To help ensure everyone has a safe Halloween, here are a few safety tips for everyone to follow.
Trick-or- Treating:
- All young children should be accompanied by an adult while trick-or-treating.
- Make a safe route and meeting spot for older children who are going alone.
- Only travel in well-lit, familiar areas and never enter a stranger’s home
- Swords, knives, and other costume accessories should be short, soft, and flexible.
- Wear flame-resistant costumes and avoid walking near lit candles.
- Examine all candy before eating.
- Keep all electronic devices away while walking to avoid distractions.
- Consider using some type of reflective tape either on costumes or bags; this will help drivers see children better.
Expecting Trick-or-Treaters:
- Make sure walking areas are well-lit and clear of any debris or obstacles.
- Keep jack-o’-lanternsor anything with a flame away from doorsteps and walkways.
- Do not give out homemade treats.
Drivers:
- Watch for children walking on medians, roadways and curbs.
- Enter and exit driveways carefully.
- Be aware that children may be wearing darker clothing and they may try to cross the street between parked cars.
- Try to avoid neighborhoods and highly populated residential areas during trick-or-treat.
