Spin Electric Scooters are taking the city of Pittsburgh by storm.
Electric Scooter usage is rising across major cities in the U.S and Pittsburgh is one of the latest to receive the scooters.
These rentable scooters are part of a ride-sharing program offered in many major cities.
Officially launched in July, the scooters are part of Move PGH.
Move PGH is part of a collaboration with Pittsburgh Mobility Collective. Their goal is to provide affordable transportation for Pittsburghers.
Anyone over the age of eighteen can rent the Spin Electric Scooters. Users should download the Transit app to locate the scooters across the Pittsburgh area.
You can rent them for a starting fee of $1 plus 39 cents per minute. Riders with low incomes can apply for cheaper rates through the Spin Access program.
Scooters can reach speed of up to 15mph.
The scooters are only allowed on Pittsburgh streets with a maximum speed limit of 25mph and in bike lanes. They must also be parked in legal parking areas or next to a bike rack.
With any new project, there have been some “growing pains and issues” according to the city of Pittsburgh.
Illegal parking, using scooters on fast-paced roads and tunnels and traveling too close to bicyclists in bike lanes are just a few of the issues.
Move PGH plans to work on these issues to ensure rider and public safety.
Although these programs can benefit the public, they are quickly becoming dangerous. Little training, lack of safety features and defective scooters are sending more and more people to emergency rooms every day.
